Part of Darjeeling Town, dusk | Photo

This is a photo taken during twilight or you may say dusk – a part of Darjeeling town. Darjeeling had been severely experiencing some extreme cold wintery type of weather conditions starting right after the Diwali festivals. The weather turned all foggy with chilly winds blowing and we had to tug ourselves into more of those woolies.

Autumn flush for Darjeeling Tea production was affected a bit due to cold weather prevalent – managers from some Darjeeling Tea plantations informed me that some sections of their plantation had totally stopped bearing tea leaves due to the cold weather which inhibits growth – this is the very reason why Darjeeling Tea production goes into some kind of hibernation during the winter months. The inhibition of tea growth is simply due to lack of sunlight which is much needed for the new shoots to sprout properly.

Anyways, tea lovers need not worry about the new 2011 Autumn Flush, I have already bought some and looking out for some more :)

At the moment its been about 3 days, the sun god seems happy and its dawning upon us and we are now able to dry up our frozen bones. But the winds blowing across seems to be freezing in nature.

Enjoy the photo!

Rainy, chilly Darjeeling: More intake of Darjeeling Tea

When it’s spring in the Himalayas…
When the sun-spun rain falls gently on the mountains…
When magical mists like divine dragons rise from forests…
That is when the mystique of Darjeeling Tea is created.

The chillier it grows, Darjeeling people need more of the woolies! With the passing of “Nag Panchami“, a Hindu festival, where nag or a snake is worshipped, Darjeeling grows chillier by the day – The details of Nag Panchami can be got by clicking the wikipedia link above. It is a common belief here in Darjeeling and with the rest of the Nepalese community that with the passing of Nag Panchami festival which occurs during peak moonsoon time, also starts the chilly days, and till date, I have found that to be true – Darjeeling gets chillier by the day!

Darjeeling Tea growing and processing normally gets dormant with the passing of Autumn Flush which is near! Tea bushes in Darjeeling can withstand certain harsh temperatures, but not the winter months of Darjeeling when it is normally near the zero degree mark. The cold temperature inhibits growth of tea bushes because tea needs sun for proper growth – and during these winter days, sun is probably unseen due to intense foggy weather. There will be zero production, but the need for tea would be tremendous. Its always a good idea to stock up those Darjeeling Tea tins and get yourselves warm when in need.

For a few days now, Darjeeling has been receiving a lot of continuous rain which is at the same time causing the temperature to drop – creating a chilly Darjeeling atmosphere. I have probably ransacked my cupboards  for all my woolies and will probably wash it and keep it ready, just in case. But Darjeeling is known to have sun during the months of October-November: months when the Autumnal Darjeeling Teas will be processed – Hope we have good weather for the tea bushes to sprout newer forms of autumnal life.

Just a side note: notice the vehicle going up on that climbing road depicted on the picture above – an example of the steepness of the roads in Darjeeling :)

In the meantime, drinking a pot of lovely Second Flush Darjeeling Tea!

Doing Something Good This Christmas
hayden_hall_darjeeling01 We always wanted to help non profit organizations / tea laborers, needy Darjeeling people etc. and have been doing in small ways. This time we want you to get involved as well. People travel all the way from different countries to Darjeeling to do their desired social work and here is your chance to give something to the needy. No, we are not asking for any money, we will tell how you can get involved. The perfect organization to work with is Hayden Hall, a women’s non profit organization which has been operational from 1969. They focus on poor women’s self-sufficiency programs which in turn focus on solving the problems their children, families and communities face. They make various handicraft products which are all amazing, but since we are tea centric, our focus got diverted towards the beautiful tea cozies that they make. We will not sell their tea cozies but instead send as a free addition to your existing order which should total up to USD 199. Don’t forget USD 199 total comes with Free Fedex or equivalent shipping and yes, this will also include one year of free membership to our Darjeeling Tea Club. Satisfied? How are you helping them – You buy the teas, we send you the tea cozies free. Our buying of tea cozies is indirectly your buying of the tea cozies and a direct support to Hayden Hall. And not to forget that all our teas are on sale at the moment!

(I visited Hayden Hall some days ago to place the tea cozies order and met Miss Radha, one of the main Hayden Hall social worker. It was a tremendous feeling talking about all things they are doing for the poor women folk. A visit to their 100% Fairtrade shop was just overwhelming. Meeting the actual women folk doing their daily jobs was like getting in touch with poverty trying to make a living – despite all their worries, very jovial women, always happy!)

Closing Note:
This year’s tea season’s been with up and down initially with the starting of First Flush and the hectic sourcing from the low production was difficult, but we thank God and luck that our pursuit for quality teas got fulfilled. We will be striving for the best First Flush teas next year and hope the weather conditions do peak up for the peak quality teas.
